  • Indian triumph by 183 runs is their biggest by runs margin in World Cup, bettering the previous best of 181 runs against Namibia at Pietermaritzburg in this edition of the World Cup.
  • Indian victory by 183 runs is their bigest against Sri Lanka in ODIs/World Cup, bettering the 157-run win at Taunton in the 1999 World Cup.
  • Six victories in a row in this edition is India's best sequence in the World Cup - the previous best was by Kapil Dev's squad in the 1987-88 World Cup.
  • India recorded their 40th victory against Sri Lanka in ODIs - the most against any country.
  • Sri Lanka's total of 109 is the lowest innings total by any team against India in World Cup - the previous lowest against India was 120 by East Africa at Leeds in 1975.
  • Sri Lanka's 109 is their second lowest score in World Cup - their lowest is 86 against West Indies at Old Trafford in 1975.
  • Sri Lanka's previous lowest score against India in the World Cup was 216 at Taunton in 1999.
  • Sachin Tendulkar's 97 is his 61st fifty in ODIs.  Sachin, for the 8th time in his ODI career, has been dismissed in the 90s, which is now an Indian record, outstripping Mohammad Azharuddin's seven scores of 90s.  Aravinda de Silva (SL) holds the record for having been dismissed in the 90s on 9 occasions.
  • Sachin, with 3 scores in the 90s, holds the record for most Nineties in the history of the World Cup. The four other players with two 90s each in World Cup are - Martin Crowe (NZ), Zaheer Abbas (P), Richie Richardson (WI) and Aravinda de Silva (SL).
  • Sachin's 97 is his 11th fifty in World Cup.
  • During his knock of 97, Sachin Tendulkar achieved another important milestone in his career.When his score reached 26, he completed his 500 runs in World Cup and became the first batsman in the history of World Cup to aggregate 500 runs in a particular competition twice.  No one has achieved the feat even once.
  • When Sachin's score reached 50, he surpassed his previous record tally of 523 runs in the 1995-96 competition.
  • Playing in his 30th World Cup game, he has taken his tally to 1630 runs at an average of 62.69, extending his world record.

  • Sachin's aggregate of 571 runs in 8 matches in a competition is the fourth best in the history of ODIs.  The top four are:

  • The 153-run partnership for the first wicket between Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag is India's best against Sri Lanka in World Cup, surpassing the previous best of 60 between Sunil Gavaskar and Anshuman Gaekwad at Old Trafford in the 1979 World Cup.
  • Overall, this was the fourth century partnership for India for the first wicket in World Cup.  The 153-run partnership is now the second best for India in World Cup - the best is 163 between Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja against Kenya at Cuttack in 1995-96.
  • The 153-run stand is the best by this pair in World Cup, surpassing the 99 for the first wicket against Zimbabwe at Harare in this edition of the World Cup.
  • The pair of Sachin and Sehwag has now put on SIX century stands for the first wicket in 28 innings.
  • Sehwag recorded his 9th fifty in ODIs.  Sehwag's 66 off 76 balls is highest score against Sri Lanka, surpassing his previous best of 39 in the Natwest series at Bristol in 1999.
  • Sehwag recorded his highest ever score in World Cup, surpassing his previous best of 36 against Zimbabwe at Harare in this edition of the World Cup.
  • Sehwag and Sachin's 153-run stand is the best at this ground in World Cup for any wicket, surpassing the 140 (unbroken) between Nathan Astle and Stephen Fleming for the second wicket for New Zealand against South Africa in this edition of the World Cup.
  • Chaminda Vaas, with 18 wickets is the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup.  His tally is now the best by any Sri Lankan, surpassing Asantha de Mel's 17 wickets in 6 matches in the 1983 World Cup.
  • Sachin, when on 52, completed his 2000 runs against Sri Lanka in 51 matches.  He is the first Indian to do so and the third in the world, joining two Pakistanis - Saeed Anwar (2197 in 52 matches) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (2139 in 56).
  • Five ducks (Atapattu, Mubarak, Jayawardene, de Silva and Nissanka) in Sri Lankan innings equalled the record for most ducks in an innings in World Cup.  The previous two instances were England vs. West Indies at Lord's in 1979 and Canada vs. Sri Lanka at Paarl in 2002-03.
  • Mohammad Kaif became the first fielder in the history of the World Cup to take 4 catches in an Innings.
  • Kaif is now the fifth Indian fielder to have taken 4 catches in an innings in ODIs, joining Sunil Gavaskar (vs.Pakistan, 1984-85), Mohammad Azharuddin (vs.Pakistan, 1997), Sachin Tendulkar (vs. Pakistan, 1997-98) and Rahul Dravid (vs.West Indies, 1999).
  • Javagal Srinath, with four wickets in an innings, took his tally to 14 in this World Cup.  He is the leading wicket-taker for India in this edition of the World Cup.  Srinath's previous best performance in World Cup was in the 1999 competition when he claimed 12 wickets at  26.08 runs apiece in 8 matches.
  • Srinath's first Man of the Match award in World Cup is actually his fifth in ODIs.
  • Srinath took his tally to 42 in 31 matches in World Cup.  Only Wasim Akram has claimed more wickets than Srinath - 55 wickets (ave.23.84) in 38 matches.
  • The tenth wicket partnership of 31 runs between Muralitharan and Fernando is Sri Lanka's best vs. India in World Cup/ODIs.  The said partnership is Sri Lanka's second best in World Cup for the 10th wicket - the best is 33 between V.B.John and R.J.Ratnayake against England at Leeds in 1983.
